RANI MERA NAAM (1972)
Well lookit here - no posts for bloomin' ages and then two come along on the same day. Well, don't get too excited as this is just a quick pointer to the always eye-popping Worldwierd Cinema where some reflections the ultra-obscure Rani Mera Naam have just been posted.
If you can find me a finer slice of Kill Billesque Asian furious female insanity I'd be happy to sit down with you, but it better have equally toe-tapping, brain-frying musical numbers (courtesy of the one & only R.D.Burman) and a bad guy who resembles Hi-de-Hi's Paul Shane (Baby Baby!). It'll also have to outdo the birght-eyed Vijayalalita, who impresses here as a rootin' tootin' six-gun shootin' cutie with revenge on her mind, after witnessing her entire family being blown to bits by a marauding gang of ne'er do wells during Sunday lunch!!
Whooo mama - I bagged a copy of this one-of-a-kind classic from Bill at Onar Films a few years back, and it arrived just in time to confuse all assembled for a leftfield Christmas Day screening.
The print on the ancient VHS looked as if it'd been dragged all the way from India to Greece, but if your sensibilities for this sort of thing are in line with mine you know that only imporves the entire experience! It also gave one the lovely film geek feeling that I'd tracked down a unique piece of lunacy virtually no one else had seen! Well, this obviously is rarely the case and now a copy from the same source seems to have been dumped down onto DVDr for all and sundry to enjoy - so I'm happy to point you in it's twisted direction!
